Ogi City, Saga Prefecture – Landing at approximately 12:41pm local time in Japan’s Saga International Airport, British tourist Trigre Messy was welcomed happily by locals upon his arrival. “I was told being a tourist was a terrible thing,” stated Messy, “but it seems many people here in Japan don’t seem to mind tourists at all. In fact, many people here seem flat out pleased to see me.” Messy noted that he arrived in Saga primarily to see the international balloon festival, which attracts visitors from all across the globe to Saga, Japan. The festival features several hundred balloons and multiple events, including a relay race, junior balloon trials, and a new contest to see whose balloon will stay in the air the longest after shutting off the flame.

“Yeah, I don’t tourists much at all,” said Saga local Bob Nakayama. “Most of the tourists here are pretty dope, actually. The only tourists I’d rather not see are the ones with beards on their necks. They seem to have a fetish for everything in this country, especially the children and women.” Indeed, tourists could be seen comingling with local residents all over Saga and Ogi cities during the festivals. Not only Japan, but individuals from Nigeria, California, Canada, Mexico, France, and New York filled up Saga prefecture all week. Many locals said it was like a miniature Olympics or melting pot of culture in and around the ballooning hot spots.

The 2024 Saga balloon festival was cut short after typhoon Kong-Rey struck Saga. Kong-Rey was simply a tropical depression after bouncing off of China’s coast, but it was still enough to result in 320 deaths in Saga, including crashing 34 separate balloons.
